What are CPT Codes?
Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes are numbers assigned to every task and service a medical practitioner may provide to a patient including medical, surgical, and diagnostic services. They are used by insurers to determine the amount of reimbursement that a practitioner will receive by an insurer.
CPT Codes for COVID-19 Vaccines
The American Medical Association (AMA) has approved unique CPT codes for COVID-19 immunizations. These codes help to better track, report, and analyze data for the planning and allocation of vaccines.
As of August 14, 2023, the CPT Editorial Panel approved the addition of new product codes 91318-91322 to identify monovalent vaccine product for immunization against COVID-191. These codes are used for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. The existing Novavax Product Code 91304 was retained for the currently authorized vaccine product available for use in the U.S.
Here are the new CPT codes for Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccines, as well as a new administration code that applies to all COVID vaccines:
- 90480: Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, single dose.
- 91318 (Pfizer): Severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2-) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, 3 mcg/0.2 mL dosage, diluent reconstituted, tris-sucrose formulation, for intramuscular use3.
- 91319 (Pfizer): Severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2-) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, 10 mcg/0.2 mL dosage, diluent reconstituted, tris-sucrose formulation, for intramuscular use3.
- 91320 (Pfizer): Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, 30 mcg/0.3 mL dosage, tris-sucrose formulation, for intramuscular use.
- 91321 (Moderna): Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, 25 mcg/0.25 mL dosage, for intramuscular use.
- 91322 (Moderna): Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, 50 mcg/0.5 mL dosage, for intramuscular use.
